Prior to becoming a therapist, I actually had a 'real life' comprised of full time employment while working towards my college degree. I studied business at California State University, Sacramento while working for a local family owned grocer, Bel Air Markets. The combination of the two environments benefited me tremendously: I understood the business principles espoused by my professors and I was on the fast-track for promotions with Bel Air.
In 1992, the Wong family sold Bel Air Markets to Raley's Supermarkets. Given the impending changes, I felt the need to fully assess my career options. One major facet of my managerial functions that I thoroughly enjoyed was to counsel employees. Given the changes within the grocery industry, I decided to follow my calling and pursue a degree that would enable me to become a licensed psychotherapist. I consulted with my good friend and established psychotherapist, Tim Dakin, MFT, and researched schools that offered Master's programs designed for licensure in the state of California. I decided on the program at Chapman University. In 2003, after completing my postgraduate education and more than 3,000 hours of internship, I passed California's written and oral licensing exams. Then, in 2004 and after nearly six years of employment, I left Cross Creek Counseling Agency and opened my own private practice with offices in Roseville and Midtown Sacramento.
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and our extended family. Golf, boating, gardening, hiking, fly fishing, and the pursuit of fantastic BBQ are all necessities that help keep me balanced.
